Butter Chicken

Delicious Homemade Butter Chicken

Indulge in the creamy and flavorful delight of Butter Chicken. This classic Indian dish features tender chicken simmered in a rich tomato-based sauce infused with butter and aromatic spices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Marinate the chicken: In a bowl, combine the chicken pieces with ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes (or up to overnight in the refrigerator).
  2. Cook the chicken: Heat 1 tbsp of butter in a large skillet or pot over medium heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the sauce: In the same skillet, melt the remaining 1 tbsp of butter. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and golden, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add tomatoes and simmer: Stir in the crushed tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Blend the sauce (optional): For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to blend the sauce until smooth.
  6. Combine and finish: Return the cooked chicken to the skillet with the sauce. Stir in the heavy cream and simmer for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  7. Garnish and serve: Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan bread.

Notes

For a richer flavor, add a tablespoon of tomato paste along with the crushed tomatoes. Serve with a side of basmati rice and warm naan bread for a complete meal.
