Cheese Fondue Recipe

This classic cheese fondue is a warm, comforting, and shareable dish perfect for a cozy night in. It features a blend of Gruyère and Emmental cheeses melted with white wine and Kirsch, served with crusty bread for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 clove garlic, halved
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 pound Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 8 ounces Emmental cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons Kirsch (cherry brandy)
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Crusty bread, for dipping

Instructions

  1. Rub the inside of a fondue pot with the cut garlic cloves. Discard the garlic.
  2. Pour the white wine and lemon juice into the fondue pot and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. In a bowl, toss the Gruyère and Emmental cheeses with the cornstarch.
  4. Gradually add the cheese mixture to the simmering wine, stirring constantly in a figure-eight motion to prevent clumping.
  5. Continue stirring until the cheese is completely melted and smooth.
  6. Stir in the Kirsch, nutmeg, and black pepper.
  7. Transfer the fondue pot to a heat source (such as a fondue burner) to keep the fondue warm.
  8. Serve immediately with crusty bread for dipping.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a splash of dry mustard or a dash of hot sauce to the fondue. You can also serve with other dippers like apple slices, cooked vegetables, or steamed potatoes.
