Cheesy Au Gratin Potatoes Recipe

This Cheesy Au Gratin Potatoes recipe is the ultimate comfort food. Thinly sliced potatoes are baked in a creamy, cheesy sauce until golden brown and bubbly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  3. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, creating a roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, or until slightly thickened.
  6. Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Remove from heat.
  7. Add 1 1/2 cups Gruyere cheese and 3/4 cup cheddar cheese to the sauce. Stir until melted and smooth.
  8. Arrange a layer of potato slices in the prepared baking dish. Pour some of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, making sure to coat them evenly.
  9. Repeat layers of potatoes and cheese sauce until all potatoes are used, ending with a layer of cheese sauce.
  10. Sprinkle the remaining Gruyere and cheddar cheese over the top.
  11. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  12. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired.

Notes

For a richer flavor, try using a combination of Gruyere, Fontina, and Parmesan cheeses. You can also add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the cheese sauce for a little kick.
