Warm and Comforting Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes

Indulge in creamy, cheesy comfort with this classic scalloped potatoes recipe. Thinly sliced potatoes baked in a rich cheese sauce make for the perfect side dish or satisfying main course.

  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, and 1 1/2 cups of cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  6. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  7. Repeat layers with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  8. Top with the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese.
  9. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and golden brown.
  10. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a layer of thinly sliced ham or bacon between the potato layers. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
