Cranberry Orange Scones

These Cranberry Orange Scones are bursting with bright citrus flavor and tart cranberries, making them the perfect treat for breakfast or afternoon tea. They’re easy to make and even easier to enjoy!

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 3/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 orange, zest and juice
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • Turbinado sugar, for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the dried cranberries and orange zest.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, orange juice, and egg.
  6. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a 1-inch thick circle.
  8. Cut the circle into 8 wedges.
  9. Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Brush the tops with a little milk or cream (optional) and sprinkle with turbinado sugar, if desired.
  11. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
