French Toast Bake recipe

This French Toast Bake is a deliciously easy breakfast casserole featuring layers of buttery bread soaked in a cinnamon-vanilla custard and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups brioche or challah bread, cubed
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar and maple syrup for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to soak all pieces.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
  6. Remove the dish from the refrigerator and sprinkle the top with brown sugar and melted butter.
  7. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  8. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, add fresh berries or chopped nuts on top before baking, or use stale bread for better custard absorption.
