  • 3 to 4 tablespoons milk
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for frosting)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Food coloring (optional, for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth.
  4. Beat in egg and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Add milk as needed to form a soft dough.
  6. Roll out dough to about ¼ inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
  7. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until edges are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. For the frosting, beat together powdered sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add food coloring if desired.
  10. Frost cooled cookies with the prepared icing and let set before serving.
