These Halloween Whoopie Pies are a spooky and delicious treat! Soft chocolate cookies are filled with a creamy orange buttercream for a festive dessert.

  • For the Cookies:
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • For the Filling:
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Orange food coloring

Instructions

  1. Make the Cookies: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Drop rounded tablespoons of batter onto prepared baking sheets.
  6. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until set. Let cool completely on baking sheets.
  7. Make the Filling: In a large bowl, cream together butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  8. Beat in milk and vanilla extract. Add orange food coloring until desired color is achieved.
  9. Assemble the Whoopie Pies: Spread filling onto the flat side of one cookie. Top with another cookie, flat side down.
  10. Repeat with remaining cookies and filling.
  11. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

For extra Halloween flair, add sprinkles or edible eyes to the filling or cookies.
