Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for brushing
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • Salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve sugar and yeast in warm water. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 6-8 inches long.
  7. Place the breadsticks on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each one.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. While the breadsticks are baking, melt the butter in a small bowl. Stir in the garlic powder and Italian seasoning.
  10. As soon as the breadsticks come out of the oven, brush them generously with the garlic butter. Sprinkle with salt.
  11. Serve warm.

Notes

For an extra touch, sprinkle the breadsticks with grated Parmesan cheese after brushing with garlic butter.
