Delight in this nostalgic Old-Fashioned Gumdrop Nougat Candy, combining chewy nougat with colorful, fruity gumdrops for a sweet, classic treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 egg whites, beaten until stiff peaks form
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups assorted gumdrops, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional, such as walnuts or almonds)

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease and line a 9×9 inch pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a heavy saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until sugar dissolves.
  3. Bring to a boil and cook without stirring until mixture reaches 250°F (hard ball stage) on a candy thermometer.
  4. While syrup cooks, beat egg whites in a large bowl until stiff peaks form.
  5. Gradually pour hot sugar syrup into the beaten egg whites, beating continuously until mixture thickens and becomes glossy.
  6. Stir in vanilla extract, chopped gumdrops, and nuts (if using) quickly before the mixture sets.
  7. Pour the nougat mixture into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  8. Allow to cool and set completely at room temperature, about 2 hours.
  9. Once set, cut into small squares and store in an airtight container.

Notes

For extra flavor, toast the nuts before adding them, or swap gumdrops for dried fruit for a different twist.
