Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

This creamy and cheesy scalloped potatoes recipe features tender sliced potatoes baked in a rich, savory sauce, perfect as a comforting side dish.

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk, cooking until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until cheese melts.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  6. Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce, spreading evenly.
  7. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.
  9. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, add cooked bacon bits or caramelized onions between the layers before baking.
