Delicious Southern Baked Mac and Cheese

This Southern baked mac and cheese is a creamy, cheesy, and comforting dish perfect for any occasion. Made with a blend of cheeses and baked to golden perfection, it’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
  4. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Stir in salt, pepper, and paprika. Remove from heat.
  6. Add cheddar cheese, Monterey Jack cheese, and Gruyere cheese to the saucepan, stirring until melted and smooth.
  7. Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to coat.
  8. Pour the macaroni and cheese into the prepared baking dish.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  10. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For an extra crispy topping, sprinkle breadcrumbs on top before baking.
