A Hearty Plate of Southern Fried Cabbage

This classic Southern Fried Cabbage recipe delivers tender, smoky cabbage sautéed with crispy bacon and sweet onions, making it a delicious and comforting side dish perfect for any meal. Quick to prepare, it’s a staple that brings hearty flavor to your dinner table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 pound bacon, chopped
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 head green cabbage (about 2-2.5 lbs), cored and chopped
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (or water)
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (optional, for brightness)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • Red pepper flakes (optional, for a kick)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the rendered bacon fat in the skillet.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the bacon fat and cook over medium heat until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. Stir well to coat the cabbage with the bacon fat and onions. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage starts to wilt.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth (or water) and apple cider vinegar (if using). Season with black pepper and salt to taste. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes if desired.
  5. Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender to your liking, stirring occasionally.
  6. Uncover, increase heat to medium, and continue to cook for a few more minutes to allow any remaining liquid to evaporate, stirring frequently.
  7. Stir in the reserved crispy bacon just before serving. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve hot.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of smoked paprika or a dash of your favorite hot sauce along with the chicken broth.
