Southern turnip greens recipe

A classic Southern dish featuring tender, flavorful turnip greens slow-cooked with smoky bacon and seasoned perfectly for a comforting side or main.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs fresh turnip greens, washed and chopped
  • 4 slices smoked bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving drippings in the pot.
  2. Add diced onion to the bacon drippings and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped turnip greens to the pot, stirring to coat with the sautéed onions and garlic.
  5. Pour in chicken broth and apple cider vinegar. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
  6. Cover and simmer for 45 to 60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until greens are tender.
  7. Season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.
  8. Stir in the cooked bacon pieces just before serving for added smoky flavor.

Notes

For a richer flavor, substitute smoked ham hocks for bacon, and serve with cornbread or over steamed rice for a complete Southern meal.
