Delight in these festive Twisted Christmas Cookies, featuring a tender, buttery dough twisted with vibrant red and green accents perfect for the holiday season.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • Red and green gel food coloring
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until combined.
  4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough into three equal portions. Leave one plain, add red food coloring to the second, and green food coloring to the third; knead each until color is evenly incorporated.
  6. Roll each colored dough portion into long thin strips.
  7. Place one strip of each color side by side, then gently twist them together to form a rope.
  8. Cut the twisted ropes into 2-inch pieces and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them evenly.
  9. Chill the cookies in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to firm up.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the cookies for 12–14 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
  11. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or a drizzle of white chocolate once the cookies have cooled.
