  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons sour cream
  • Red and pink colored sugar or sprinkles for decoration
  • Royal icing or buttercream frosting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.
  4. Gradually blend in the flour mixture alternated with sour cream, mixing well after each addition until a soft dough forms.
  5. Roll dough into 1/4 inch thick sheets on a lightly floured surface.
  6. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and place them 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets.
  7. Decorate with colored sugar or sprinkles before baking if desired.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges just start to turn golden.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, optionally decorate with royal icing or buttercream frosting to enhance the Valentine theme.

Notes

For festive flair, try adding a hint of lemon zest to the dough or using colored frosting to personalize your cookies.
